A sore throat can range from a minor nuisance to a sign of a more serious infection that requires treatment. At Blue Water Primary Care, we offer prompt, same-day evaluation of sore throat symptoms to accurately identify the cause and get you on the path to recovery as quickly as possible.
Sore throats have several potential causes, each requiring a different approach. Viral pharyngitis — the most common cause — is typically associated with cold or flu viruses and resolves on its own with rest and supportive care. Bacterial pharyngitis caused by Group A Streptococcus (strep throat) requires antibiotic treatment to prevent complications including rheumatic fever and kidney inflammation. Other causes of sore throat include allergies, acid reflux, dry air, vocal strain, and in rare cases, more serious conditions.
When you come in for a sore throat evaluation, your provider will take a thorough history of your symptoms, examine your throat, tonsils, and lymph nodes, and perform a rapid strep test when indicated — providing results within minutes. If strep is confirmed, we will prescribe the appropriate antibiotic and ensure you understand how to take it correctly and when to expect improvement.
For patients with recurrent sore throats or suspected tonsil issues, we can assess whether further evaluation or a referral to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist is appropriate. Walk-in visits for sore throat are welcome during regular office hours. Most insurance plans cover evaluation and treatment of sore throat.
